Choosing stretch needles

Check the exact stretch family

Compare the point, eye and scarf specified for the needle model. Some families share a similar point while using different systems or geometry. Start from the complete code accepted by your machine.

Test recovery and seam behavior

Test on scraps with the same thread and seam layers as the finished piece. The way a seam behaves when the fabric stretches is more informative than a flat swatch made with a different setup.

Department questions

Should I size up if I see skipped stitches?

Check the machine setup and compare the manufacturer guidance for needle geometry, fabric and thread. Test one change at a time before choosing a larger size.

Does Super Stretch describe the same system across brands?

Compare the printed system with the manual for your machine. The name describes the intended use and is separate from the fit code.

Should I test across both seam directions?

Use the direction and layers that occur in the finished piece. A sample in the same direction helps you judge how the seam behaves under use.
