Compare needle eyes for topstitch and metallic thread
Choose the needle system first, then compare the thread path and point for the project. A specialty eye solves a different problem from an increase in nominal size.
Read the needle family description
The Topstitch and Metallic entries in the maker’s guide describe different uses. Check the eye, groove and recommended thread rather than assuming that all larger-eye needles give the same result on your fabric.
Try the thread you will actually sew
Compare how the thread travels and how the stitches look on a sample. If you change the needle type, keep the fabric and thread constant while you compare. Follow the machine and thread maker instructions for threading and setup.
Check the system and the package
Some specialty packs use a separate label such as 130 N or 130 MET. Match what the machine maker supports and check the stated nominal size and count before ordering. A mixed-size pack is useful when you test several thread and fabric combinations.
