Check twin needle spacing and machine clearance

Verify that your exact machine supports a twin needle before choosing the point, nominal size and distance between its two needles.

Read both measurements on the label

A twin label can report its spacing in millimeters and its nominal size as separate figures. One describes how far apart the needles sit. The other describes their individual size. Check the point type independently as well.

Match the plate, foot and stitch

Review the machine manual for supported twin options, permitted stitches, the needle plate and the presser foot. The plate opening and foot clearance matter throughout the stitch movement. Follow the machine’s checking procedure before sewing.

Choose the point for the fabric

A stretch twin and a universal twin can have the same nominal spacing but different points. Pick the spacing your machine supports and then compare the documented fabric use for the exact twin type.

Guide questions

Is the wider twin always an upgrade?

Choose the spacing your machine supports and the distance you want between rows. A wider setting can exceed the available clearance.

Can I choose the spacing from a machine's maximum stitch width?

Read the machine manual's twin-specific guidance. The maximum stitch width alone does not establish which twin setups are permitted.

Can I use a regular twin in a serger?

Use only the needle system and configurations the serger manual specifies. SCHMETZ lists its regular household twins separately from serger needles.

Which accessory suits the job?

  1. The Universal Twin assortment gives you multiple size and spacing combinations to compare. The Stretch Twin gives you a known 2.5 mm spacing at size 75 for a compatible knit hem setup.

  2. The Universal 1.6/70 and Jeans 4.0/100 twins target different thread, fabric and spacing choices. Read the exact setup permitted by the machine before testing either one.
